MIRAFLORES OPEN BOWLS COMPETITION - 2006

The Miraflores Open this year ran from Wednesday 22nd November to Wednesday 29th November and attracted a record breaking number of entries in the 4 categories that were included (Ladies Singles, Gents Singles, Mixed Pairs & Mixed Triples). Competitors came from the whole Costa del Sol and from the U.K. (including Jersey). In fact 180 games were played throughout the eight days. The number of competitors in action meant that for the first 4 days of the competition all 16 rinks and both greens were in use with play switching to the West green from the quarter final stages onward. We were also delighted to welcome in excess of 100 spectators on finals day which was remarked on by those present as being an exceptional number.

This year the club was delighted that the competition was sponsored by the DRYTECH Group (www.drytechgroup.com) whose representatives Darren and Ashley were present throughout. In his closing speech Club President Derek Shemmings thanked them for keeping us all “Dry” throughout the week as the weather forecast had not been favourable beforehand, but apart from one brief shower on Saturday, we were very lucky and suffered no interruptions to play.

The quality of the competition was exceptional with six of the singles games going to 20-20 scores and on two occasions finishing on a measure to decide the match. The pairs competition where matches were played in 2 sets with a play-off of three ends in the event of a tie resulted in over forty matches being decided by play-offs.

The smooth running of the event was due to a lot of hard work by members and thanks must go to Dennis Wood and Clive Thomas for their help as Umpires on a number of occasions. While in the bar, Carol and Grant kept everyone fed and watered with their yummy “Bacon Butties” being much sought after.

Finals Day on Wednesday, proved to be both an exciting and competitive day’s bowling. First up were the Mixed Triples being fought between David Hunter, Isabella Neilson and Carol Coates against Tony Frowd and Douglas and Pauline Meakin. This was a hard fought long battle with Tony and team finally coming out on top 21-15.

The Mixed Triples finalists (L to R): Carol Coates, Isabella Neilson, Davie Hunter, Douglas & Pauline Meakin and Tony Frowd

The Mixed Pairs followed with Christine and Jim Taylor playing John Sullivan and Dorrian Ives and proved to be even more exciting with one set each and then into the three ends tie break. With Christine holding shot and only one wood left John put up the wood of the Championship to take the Jack into the ditch resulting in a delighted roar from the large group of spectators.

The Pairs finalists with our sponsors (L to R): John Sullivan, Chris Taylor, Darren (DRYTECH Group) , Dorrian Ives, Ashley (DRYTECH Group) & Jim Taylor

The Men’s Singles between Mike Detheridge and Sam Hughes was again a cliff hanger with Mike breaking through after being well down to win 21-16.

Men's Finalists: Sam Hughes & Mike Detheridge

The Ladies gave each other an excellent game with Jackie Knight pulling back against Dorrian Ives from 14-7 down to take the lead at 17-19 after changing to a full length Jack.   Unfortunately she lost it in the ditch at the twenty seventh  end allowing Dorrian  the opportunity to play to her preferred length and go on to gain the extra shots needed for a 21-19 win.

With the moon in the sky, and the temperatures dropping rapidly the presentations were made to all the finalists. Followed by the scorecard draw for Dinners from local Restaurants Miraflores and Los Porches, and meat vouchers from McKenna’s the butcher. The star prize donated by DRYTECH for a weekend in Madrid was won by Brian and Marie Hurst.

Maggie Ogden from Benavista very kindly brought a bottle full of small coins for our charity boxes on the last day, we decided to organise a sweep at 1 euro a go to guess  the amount, Carol & Grant happily donated a bottle of wine as a prize for the nearest. The bottle contained 27.25 euros and the nearest guess was Ann Rowley with 27 euros. A further 43.50 euros was raised as a result making a total of 70.75 euros which was split between Cudeca & Los Clavales. Many thanks to all those who participated.
